Often, first-time homebuyers get preoccupied with the sale price of a home when buying a house. Sure knowing how much home you can afford is critical, however there are other considerations that can either save you or cost you money in the long-term.
One of those considerations is destinations. Where are you going to go the most and what is important to you? Lets take a scenario where you work in Boise, Idaho and considering buying a home in Nampa Idaho, 16 miles apart, to get more home for your money. If you have ever done this daily commute you know that it can sometimes and often does take 45 minutes or more to get from one place to the other, meaning you would be spending 1 to 2 hours a day on the road just to get to and from work. Costs related to destinations when considering buying a home include:
These may not seem like much to some individuals but they can become a major concern if gas prices skyrocket again and we continue in the economic recession that we are currently experiencing. The key to remember is to take into account the costs so you can work them into your monthly expenses to ensure they don’t become a burden. Short-term and long-term considerations should be taken into account. If you have children or plan on having children you may want to consider looking at schools before buying a home. Often times people buy a home and send their kids to the school in that district. To most that isn’t a bad thing but it is important to know that where you buy a home will have direct impact on you and your family and it is up to you to make the best decision. Although you are likely not to find the perfect home, since there is not such thing, that meets all your needs but by placing a dollar amount and time spent on other considerations you can make an informed decision. You may even determine that buying a home closer to your destinations is the thing for you to do. ### |
