St. Luke’s Mountain States Tumor Institute

Today I was reading in the Idaho Statesman, something I rarely do, I was fascinated by the story about the Boise valley losing their bone marrow registry because to many white people were registering. Here is a program that has helped over a 100 people and it is being shut down, moved, because not enough minorities are participating. This of course is coming from the federal government.

As it is Idaho’s population is predominantly white so what would you expect…? For now white people will have to pay over $50 to be on the registry while minorities can continue to be tested for free. Remember this is a program set up by volunteers that make themselves available for testing to see if they can help others in need of a bone marrow transplant, kind of like going to the Red Cross to donate blood. I wonder what would happen if the Red Cross started charging donors $50 a pint?

Sometimes I just don’t get it… maybe I am missing something here but I guess it is up to our fearless leaders to make sure society doesn’t fall. I wonder if fewer lives will be saved because white people have to pay $50 to be added to the registry? If this is such a big deal then why the heck don’t we offer to pay minorities $50 to be swabbed and typed? Why deter kindhearted Americans whom are white?
