Live in the Here and Now

I am not much for reading the newspaper or watching the news. Often times I am unaware of circumstances that are affecting people around me. There is a reason for this… the news always seems to be BAD news. Well today I blew it, not only did I pick up a publication and read it I picked up TWO.

Sitting here regretting my actions I find that it is important to live in the here and now because you just don’t know what is around the corner. Two stories have really affected me today and I think I have my fill of heartache.

For starters I flip through “Reader’s Digest” browsing for something entertaining and useful. I come to an article called “Daycare – Drama”, I figure I am at daycare 2-times a day lets see what it has to say. In a nutshell a mother arrives daycare to pick up her 11-year old and finds all the kids with their teachers locked down in several of the bathrooms. Apparently there is a man on the premise with a gun. As she is in the bathroom with her daughter and others the gunman comes in and shoots their teacher, his estranged wife. Mind you this is in front of all her children!!

The story continues… Zoller (mom) grabbed the man’s arm. “Please stop,” she cried. “You’re scaring the children.” He shoved her to the floor. As Zoller got up, she again saw the man raise his arm. Again the gun went off. Over the gunman’s outstretched arm, Zoller saw Morgan’s anguished face (her daughter) as she cried out, “MOM!” … Zoller crabbed the man’s arm with both hands and pulled him into the hallway. As they fell to the ground, she knocked the gun from his hands and tossed it into the lobby.

The man took off and was taken into custody as he left the building…

This story makes me think of my little girl and it brings tears to my eyes. None of the children were physically hurt but could you imagine the fear and mental anguish. Not to mention a poor woman killed because of a sicko! I know today when I am picking my little one I am giving her a big hug and I thank God each day that I get to spend time with her and revel in his creation.

Part 2 to come… I need to blow my nose.
